Overview of Eta Colleges Schools

Eta Colleges International is a Canadian not-for-profit corporation established to enable quality leadership education in Sub-Saharan Africa, developing leaders with the vision, will and power to bring about resource efficiencies and social justice. The organization operates schools that prepare future African leaders capable of addressing African problems — leaders who will stand out for truth and point out malpractices — by focusing on fast learners who demonstrate leadership potential, social interest and ethical behaviour. Selected students are prepared for GCE O levels and A levels (UK) to achieve university entrance, creating a pipeline of educated leaders equipped to tackle the continent’s challenges.

School History

In 2002 an idea was born to collect books and deliver them to a learning centre in Kumba, Cameroon, birthplace of our founder, John Eta where local students could come to study and access books not available to them in any other way. Funds were raised to open the centre by 2004 and a few books were transported there by Mr. Eta.

School Operations

Unspecified donations support the operating costs of Eta International Nursery and Primary School and Eta College — Kumba, Benesure Campusnot covered by tuition, providing essential educational materials such as computers, books, scientific instruments, and furnishings, including periodic shipments of educational supplies from Canada to Cameroon. These funds ensure continuous annual support for both schools based on their level of charitable funding dependency, with the ultimate goal of achieving self-sustainability through ongoing oversight. Additionally, operational funding enables each school to continuously train its teachers annually, fostering the growth of elite education while developing educational resources from within Africa itself.

School Development

In Cameroon, as in most sub-Saharan countries, the regular school system is fraught with inefficiencies, with large class sizes and few support resources. There is currently little hope for success in that system. The problems of Africa will not be solved unless and until a critical mass of the people possesses the knowledge and the training to know that things can and should be better. With the goal to create 40, 50 or even 60 of those young people every year, Eta Colleges International will plant a powerful seed for growth and change.

Our Staff

Our teachers are chosen with care. Eta College staff receive subject training as well as intensive teacher training from Mr. John Eta annually. They are fully engaged in being present in their classrooms as well as interacting with students over the lunch break, during study hall and during extracurricular activities. The staff meet weekly as a team to share and compare ideas to improve the delivery of learning at Eta College.

Our Future

Eta International Nursery and Primary School offers enriched nursery care and enhanced education for Grades 1 to 6. Eta College — Kumba, Benesure Campus is a GCE testing centre offering quality education to students for Forms 1 to 6. Our schools will produce future African leaders capable of addressing African problems.
